So, you recently inherited, discovered, bought some gold bullion bars and now you want to know if they are real.. There are a few key identifying marks that will help determine if your piece is real or fake. Launchbar 6 9 2 – powerful fileurlemail launcher utility. Here are a few things to consider:
1. Does it come with certification from a recognized authority? If it comes with an authentic certification from a known authority, then it is probably real.

2. Does it bear the correct mintmark for the company that produced it? Compare your bullion with a genuine one. If it does not bear the correct mintmark, then it is probably fake. For example, if you have a Credit Suisse gold bar that is marked “CEI”, then it is fake. Two other details to check are the edges of the mintmark and the scale of the relief, both of which are hard for counterfeiters to replicate. The relief is usually a standard depth to allow the bars to stack on top of one another. If the relieve is not the same for your bar as it is for another, chances are, one of them is fake.
3. How much does it weigh? Fake bars will be compromised either in weight or size. Real gold is heavier compared to fake. To determine this, you will need to use a jewelry/gold weighing scale to measure the weight. Another piece of advice is to avoid larger bars, which can easily be drilled and filled with Tungsten.
4. Does the gold appear to be shaded? Real gold does not have shades (color imperfections that are different from the rest of the surface). However, some gold bars are plated with a thick layer of real gold, so just because the gold is not shaded, it still could be a fake.
If you are still not sure, then there are a few, non-invasive tests you can perform:

- The Ping test: Lightly strike your gold bullion with another coin and listen for a ping (long, high-pitched ringing) sound. Any other sound, and your bar is fake.
- Magnet test: Gold, and silver, are not magnetic. If a magnet is attracted to your bullion, then it is fake. However, some metals that are used for making fakes are also not magnetic, so beware that passing this test alone does not determine whether or not your bullion is real!

- Vale:Are fake gold bars quite common? Also, what is the chemical test, is it something that a nonprofessional could do on site if they are at an auction/pawn shop and considering buying a gold item?
- Marra M:Yes, fake gold bars are common hence the need for proper certification/authentication. I’d rather leave the chemical testing to professionals. For one, it uses caustic acid and this can cause chemical burns when mishandled. Yes, you can have gold tested by a certified jeweler who usually works for a pawnshop or owns a jewelry store.
- Vale:Thanks Marra, sounds like it’s better to leave the test to a professional!

So far I have not heard of any sources to check on serial numbers if its genuine or not. The only way to check for such is if you connect with the manufacturer of Credit Suisse, you can always try with them. This would probably be one of the most common question that they encounter everyday. https://www.credit-suisse.com/ch/en.html. It is based in Switzerland.
